Responsible innovation for the energy transition: development and implementation of an indicator system to increase the societal acceptability of new energy transition technologies

Brief description

Researching and developing innovative technologies is an important element of the energy transition. However, new technologies can only be widely deployed if they also meet with societal acceptance. V4InnovatE aims to provide assistance in assessing the acceptability of technical energy transition innovations and business models based on them. To this end, the project makes use of approaches to Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), which address the issue of responsible design and management of research and innovation processes.

The main results V4InnovatE aims at are an indicator system for assessing the acceptability of technical energy transition innovations and a guideline based on this indicator system. The guideline will set out how the developed indicator system can be used as an orientation for society-friendly technical and complementary business model innovations for the energy transition. The guide will be developed in exchange with stakeholders from industry and business associations, organized civil society, and policy/policy-supporting organizations. In addition to the practical expertise of these actors, literature and document analysis, case studies, simulations, and the evaluation of online text documents using machine learning methods serve as the basis for the development of the indicator system and the guide.

DIALOGIK contribution

The DIALOGIK sub-project pursues three overarching goals: The integration of knowledge and perspectives of practice actors from business/associations, organized civil society and policy (supporting) organizations into the development of the indicator system and the guideline via a series of dialogue-based practice-science workshops (1); the capacity development of practice actors as intended users of the guide with regard to the acceptability of energy transition innovations and possibilities of designing society-friendly technology innovations for the energy transition (2); the networking with key actors from practice who can act as multipliers for the indicator system and the guide. In addition, the sub-project is assisting the creation of the first draft of the indicator system via the literature and document analysis.
